EX-VOTO (2022) Sculpture par Luigi Mancuso

Shadow, intended as a spiritual double. From a symbolic point of view, the shadow is considered to be what contains the person's soul or its double. Anything that harms it is fatal. It is dangerous to cut it, beat it, behead it. The shadow materializes the truth and manifests the reality of the soul. With this project I want to tell the emotions and feelings that arise from reflection: what traces, the shadows of recent world history, will they leave over time? Or rather, what trace will we men leave. The sculpture depicts a coiled snake, from the Viperidae family. The snake presents a great symbolic richness and a multiplicity of meanings. It represents, positive values, the primordial being, the perpetual return, regeneration and energy. And negative, infernal forces, perversity, malice. The work is a clear reference to the staff of Asclepius, the Greek god of Medicine, son of Apollo. The oracle of Asclepius made use of the divinatory abilities of the serpent. The priest-healers used an even number of snakes which they placed on the ground in an open space. Their art consisted in carefully observing their behavior, their sways and the way in which they grouped by crawling. The rite of the incubation (incubation) instead consisted of sleeping in the sacred area of ​​the temple in order to receive revelations about the future in a dream or healing directly from Aesculapius. The sculpture represents an object given as a gift to the divinity of healing, it is a promise, a prayer, a feeling that today is caused by the shadows of recent world history, economic crisis, war, pandemic. Difficulties that man goes through in his own existence, and this happened in the past as well as in the present.

Ombra, inteso come doppio spirituale. Da un punto di vista simbolico, l’ombra è considerata ciò che contiene l’anima della persona o il suo doppio. Tutto ciò che la danneggia è funesto. È pericoloso tagliarla, pestarla, decapitarla. L’ombra materializza la verità e manifesta la realtà dell’anima. Con questo progetto voglio raccontare le emozioni e i sentimenti che nascono dalla riflessione: quali tracce, le ombre della storia recente mondiale, lasceranno nel tempo? O meglio, quale traccia lasceremo noi uomini. La scultura raffigura un serpente, della famiglia delle Viperidi, attorcigliato. Il serpente presenta una grande ricchezza a livello simbolico e una molteplicità di significati. Rappresenta, valori positivi, l’essere primordiale, il perpetuo ritorno, la rigenerazione e l’energia. E negativi, forze infernali, la perversità, la malignità. L’opera è un chiaro riferimento al bastone di Asclepio, dio greco della Medicina, figlio di Apollo. L’oracolo di Asclepio faceva ricorso alle capacità divinatorie del serpente. I sacerdoti-guaritori utilizzavano dei serpentelli in numero pari che mettevano per terra in uno spazio aperto. La loro arte consisteva nell’osservare attentamente il loro comportamento, i loro ondeggiamenti e il modo in cui si raggruppavano strisciando. Il rito dell’incubatio (incubazione) consisteva invece nel dormire nell’area sacra del tempio allo scopo di ricevere in sogno rivelazioni sul futuro oppure la guarigione direttamente da Esculapio. La scultura rappresenta un oggetto dato in dono alla divinità della guarigione, è una promessa, una preghiera, un sentimento che oggi è provocato dalle ombre della storia recente mondiale, crisi economica, guerra, pandemia. Difficoltà che l’uomo attraversa nella propria esistenza, e ciò accadeva in passato come nel presente.
