This autumn artwork represents my thoughts about fighting for life in nature and humankind.

There is a beautiful sakura tree in my neighborhood.
Every spring I go to see its light-pink flowers to catch a bit of fragile and fleeting magic.

Sakura symbolizes the transience of life and also renewal as it blossoms after the winter just for a week.
All the attention is usually only on the flowers, but this year I watched carefully for the leaves of this one special tree.

One day I was passing by and saw the leaves on the tree being eaten so harsh that almost all of them seemed like thin lace. Or like tine skeletons.
The leaves were badly damaged but they neither withered nor fell. They stayed green and the tree lived.
Autumn came, sakura leaves are first to turn yellow, and those damaged leaves turned yellow and orange as well. The sunlight shone through them, they fell in their usual schedule and tree was preparing to winter. Just as it does every year. So tranquil and peaceful.
It will blossom next spring and the new strong leaves will appear after that. The life will continue its circle.

I was looking at those hurt leaves and thought about the Ukrainian people who also had been experiencing the horrors of invasion, but stayed strong and fought for life. And I couldn’t help but hope and pray for peace and happiness for them.

The artwork was painted in limited color palette, mainly indigo, violet plus dark red and burnt siena that give late fall mood and a bit of antique feeling. The mix of graphic brush strokes and light watercolor washes hints on fading and fragility of the leaves versus strength and stability of the branch.

Watercolor

Watercolor is a painting in which gum arabic binds transparent pigments revealing the support of the painting. The gouache, of identical composition, is opaque. A watercolor is a water-based painting on paper. We rarely speak of a painting for a work painted in watercolor. Watercolor paintings are considered to be a unique way to creatively represent dreams, illusions, emotions and luminous feelings using water soluble pigments. However, painting with watercolors can be difficult. It's a difficult medium to master, in large part because it can be ruthless and unpredictable. Mistakes are difficult to correct and its fluid nature makes it difficult to control. Yet it is these very qualities that give the medium its undeniable charm.

Technic Painting

Painting is an art form of painting on a surface by aesthetically applying colored fluids. Painters represent a very personal expression on supports such as paper, rock, canvas, wood, bark, glass, concrete and many other substrates. Work of representation or invention, painting can be naturalistic and figurative, or abstract. It can have narrative, descriptive, symbolic, spiritual, or philosophical content.

I find subjects for my art in my everyday life in Japan and during trips, I’m hugely inspired by architecture, nature and culture of this beautiful country. Painting is not only an image but a story, so the viewer could look into it and feel the wind in sakura branches, touch the wood of an old house that stayed there for the centuries, dive into calm and modest atmosphere of the old Japanese shop or restaurant.
I paint only what I've seen in real life, en plein air or in my studio from photos that I take during walks and trips. Though I don’t limit myself with media but found watercolor with its transparency and lightness to be the most challenging and suitable for me at the moment.

Painting has been a huge part of my life since childhood, I’ve studied in different art studios and art schools since elementary school.

I majored in Japanese and English translation and linguistic studies in the Far Eastern University of Humanities (Khabarovsk), then moved to Japan and got my Master degree in the Japanese language and Japanese literature in Kyoto University Graduate school.

Japanese culture is a great source of inspiration for me. After graduation I decided to explore watercolor medium more and became a full-time artist.

I’ve studied academic drawing in the art studio of International Art College of Niigata, Japan and participate in International Watercolor Exhibitions held by Japanese International Watercolor Institute every year.

Currently based in Sapporo, Japan.
