Inke Bemelmans
Ancient art reflects the world of its observer (by definition), modern art requires empathy
Belgian contemporary artist, mainly autodidact in painting (2016-), digital drawing (2000-2015) and graphic design (2005-2015).
Her background in software engineering brought her to digital drawing using Adobe Illustrator. Between 2005 and 2015 she created illustrations with graphic pen. These vector drawings are cheerful, original and poetic, with a cartoonish touch.
Since 2016 Inke paints on canvas, using acrylic. Her paintings give meaning to her way of coping with life: question your position, leave your perspective and allow another perspective. She incorporates elements from comic strips, graphic design, pop art and surrealism.
In the meantime she maintains two collections of paintings next to each other: the above described semi-figurative pop style with bright colours, flat forms and clear lines ; and a second collection in an impressionistic style with nocturnal views of the city, works in which she allows the melancholy.
On her website inkebemelmans.be you can find a collection of her paintings, digital illustrations and poems.

Paintings in bright colours in stylized flat forms, semi-figurative, with a cartoonish as well as surrealist touch. Often there is a central focus, from where (nearly) every part of the painting is connected. The paintings show a mixture of botanical, human and symbolic elements, they all behave the same way. All paintings are delivered in a wooden frame.

Picturesque nocturnes. These paintings tell about nocturnal wanderings, dreamy old towns, cities where you can get lost, where you can celebrate and love, there is a lot to do, memorable. At times a bit obscure, fairytale-like too.
Possibly a tribute to Patti's "Because the night".

Until 2021, I first put paper maché on the canvas, to add some structure. Once the paper maché has dried, which takes a few days, I paint on it with acryl, in an abstract expressionist style. Most of these paintings feature 'stones', rocky formations. The herringbone motif often returns.

What I like about Kandinsky, Hergé, Alechinsky and Patti
Wassily Kandinsky, for his wonderful paintings and his view on abstract art and spirituality, his quote "the artist must train not only his eye but also his soul"
Hergé (known for "The adventures of Tintin") for his distinct "clear line" drawing style.
Pierre Alechinsky, for his beautiful graphics, his apparant anarchism, the wild imagination of his boundaries
Patti Smith, for her lyrics and her androgynous style and energy, her dream of life.
