Eva Buchmuller
I received my degree in fine arts from The Hungarian University of Fine Art, Budapest in 1967. As one of the founders of the award-winning Squat Theater, I designed and built several sets and earned several awards including an American Theater Wing Award for art and stage design of the play “L Train to El Dorado” in 1986, an American Theater Wing Award for noteworthy and unusual effects for scenic design for the play “Dreamland Burns” in 1988, an OBIE Award for sustained excellence in set design in 1988, two American Theater Wing Awards in 1986, and 1987, a Guggenheim Fellowship for visuals in theater design in 1990, and a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship in 1989. I have done several installations and exhibits including “Mr. Dead & Mrs. Free: a History of Squat Theatre” (1969 – 1991) in Artists Space, 1996, ”Mr.Dead & Mrs. Free Cafe”, MoMA P.S-1, 1998, and “Rituals of Rented Island: Object Theater, Loft Performance', and the New Psychodrama” at the Whitney Museum of American Art, 2023. I paint flowers as an exercise to learn about paint, color, and living presence. It is the same idea I practiced staging performances: how to make something present and alive. For the past 30 years, I have made my living doing decorative painting for private and commercial clients in New York City. I maintain a studio in Brooklyn.
