Fromentin traveled to Algeria and Tunisia for several years, and his artistic work reflects his interest in Arab culture and society. “The Standard Bearer” is considered one of his most important works in this area.
The painting was painted in 1861, at a time when France was conquering Algeria and other parts of North Africa. The representation of the Arab carrying a standard can be interpreted as a symbol of resistance to French colonization.
The painting is characterized by skillful use of light and shadow to create a dramatic and intense atmosphere. The Arab soldier on horseback is depicted with great strength and dignity, giving an impression of pride and determination. The details of the desert landscape, with its shades of sand and stone, add a realistic touch to the work.
