Sylvia nisoria is only slightly larger than sparrow. Their feathers on the vertex are almost always raised, and the barred warblers usually fan their tail, which is not wide, in alarm or aggression.
These birds are very cautious.
They sing rather loudly, with "flute" sounds interspersed with crackling sounds.
The call of the Barred warbler sounds as a characteristic loud, crackling sound with a metallic tinge, which subsides towards the end. When alarmed, they emit low muffled "chorr" signals.
