At the heart of this melancholy mixed media/collage landscape, stands a lone woman, her figure rendered in an austere palette of black and white. She is a quiet presence, standing firmly in the landscape. It is as if her being is entwined with the approaching storm, like a reflection of the tumultuous thoughts echoing through the vastness of her mind.

She is a quiet presence, standing firmly in the landscape. It is as if her being is entwined with the approaching storm, like a reflection of the tumultuous thoughts echoing through the vastness of her mind.

There is an amalgamation of mediums used in the mixed media/collage technique that add layers of complexity to the emotional landscape. The textural layers evoke the depth of the woman's inner turmoil.

Above the woman, birds fly, outlined against the somber clouds. Their freedom stands in stark contrast to her restrained presence and adds another layer of poignancy to the scene. "A Thousand Thoughts" captures a moment in time where the collision of dark clouds and the woman's musings converge, inviting viewers to dive into the depths of their own emotions and take a journey through the storm within them.

db Waterman is a contemporary Dutch artist. In her works she assembles original photography, assorted papers, acrylics, oil, charcoal, ink, and pencil. The variety of resources she is able to use has proved indispensable to her. The biggest challenge the collage medium posed was its unforgiving lack of transparency. Finding a way to replicate the effects of transparency afforded by paint, especially watercolors, was a large victory for the artist. The preparing labor shows through in her collages; layer upon layer of material remains visible in the finished pieces.

db Waterman believes that the body of her work is characterized by her skill for reinvention. Having always loved the appearance of weathered walls plastered with peeling paint and old posters, she revived this aesthetic with hopefully a keen and professional eye. The creative objective of her work is to “make something beautiful out of dilapidation.” Her tableaus explore the dissonance between old and new materials, intertwined in the most beautiful way possible to create dreamlike and melancholy images.
