When we went to the cinema with a group of friends 20-30 years ago, we looked forward to it several days in advance. We knew that in addition to the film experience, we would spend another hour in front of the cinema after the film in passionate debates about the impressions the film evoked in us, about the actors and their performances...
So every time before and after the performance, groups of debaters stood in front of Budapest's Horizont and Spark cinemas, and regardless of whether you knew someone, you could participate in the debates. Before the cinema, new acquaintances, new friendships and even new loves were established. Cinema united communities and created new ones.
Nowadays, such numbers of people are rarely seen in front of cinema buildings. Cinemas may slowly disappear. And with them also the social and cultural life that they developed.
I captured the memories of these old times in my works Kino Horizon and Kino Spark. If you have similar nostalgia, these paintings may be for you.

Zsombor Barakonyi is a contemporary Hungarian painter. His unique visual language offers viewers new levels of perceiving reality, in which, by overwriting conventional approaches, he builds a dialectic relationship between content and objectuality.

Barakonyi‘s works are postmodern panel paintings depicting visions of metropolitan flâneur. The depicted scene is always a snapshot, capturing a moment in the urban hubbub and commotion, which reveals itself through a model of perception whose anchoring points have been shifted into a new balance.

Zsombor Barakonyi was born in 1972, in Budapest, Hungary. After graduating from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts and also earning a Doctor of Liberal Arts degree there, Barakonyi went on to win numerous awards and prizes.
