Der Homunkulus oder lateinisch Homunculus („Menschlein“) bezeichnet einen künstlich geschaffenen (kleinen) Menschen. Die Idee des Homunkulus wurde im Spätmittelalter im Kontext alchemistischer Theorien entwickelt – oft unter Verwendung des Begriffes „Arcanum“. Häufig erscheint der Homunkulus als dämonischer Helfer magischer Praktiken. Das Motiv des Homunkulus wurde in der Literatur oft aufgegriffen, insbesondere um die Ambivalenz der modernen Technik zu illustrieren. Die vielleicht bekannteste Verwendung der Homunkulus-Idee findet sich in Goethes Faust II.

The Homunculus or Latin Homunculus (“little human being”) refers to an artificially created (small) human being. The idea of the homunculus was developed in the late Middle Ages in the context of alchemical theories - often using the term "Arcanum". The homunculus often appears as a demonic helper in magical practices. The motif of the homunculus has often been taken up in literature, particularly to illustrate the ambivalence of modern technology. Perhaps the best-known use of the homunculus idea can be found in Goethe's Faust II.
