About the author
Erwin van Krey, born 1959 in Tilburg (NL), lives and works in Vught (NL)Studied at the Royal Academy of Art and Design, 's-Hertogenbosch, graduated in 1983.With his first Amsterdam show epithets like 'romantic suburban scenery' became velcroed to his nonconformistic images. His seductive works are based on 'found footage' such as photos from magazines and folders, film stills and reproductions from art history. He chooses specific fragments from these pictures to create his own image. The settings and images often give an impression of melancholy and intimacy, but are also influenced by Surrealism. His atmospheric paintings keep in equilibrium a familiar realism with a nebulous distance.
"As a painter you don't make the connections yourself. It is the viewer who brings together things. He feels a kind of intertwining of... I don't know what."
The mostly monochrome paintings by Erwin van Krey are based on photographs are originated since the mid-1980s. In the scenic cut-out of modern everyday life, characterized by the office armchair at work and the sailboat at the weekend, they come close to Photorealism, but their style is an alienation that freezes the subject into the unreal.
The artist has been invited to many exhibitions and his work is in private collections throughout the world.
